What is fine motor development?

Fine Motor skills are those skills that require the small muscles of the hand to work together to perform precise and refined movements. By the time a child goes to school, there are many fine motor skills that they generally demonstrate in a well-integrated way. Depending on the child's previous experience and exposure to different activities, the quality of these skills might vary; however, at this age and with ongoing stimulation and exposure, the quality of a child's fine motor skills will continue to develop through childhood.

The Fine Motor Fun activity resource was developed by an occupational therapist. It consists of a series of fine motor activities to build the hand's muscles and support fine motor development. This resource aims to develop a dynamic pencil grasp and improve pencil control for neat and legible writing. The resource can be used from age four and up.

The resource includes

  • Guidelines for use and tips to promote fine motor development,
  • Variety of printable activities (35pdf pages),
  • Seven videos (demonstrating the desired finger movements, and each exercise's execution).

The activities are fun, easy to prepare, and low cost. These activities may be copied for use in the classroom, or provided as a home program or support therapy services.

These activities are not language specific, can be used by both Afrikaans and English learners.
