Handwriting is a complex process. Many aspects go into writing, of which proper letter formation is one piece of the puzzle. When letters are not formed correctly, handwriting suffers. Poor letter formation leads to handwriting that is sloppy, slow, and often hard to read.

Did you know that writing patterns help us practice pencil control and letter formation? The wave pattern helps us practice the letter formation of all the letters that start at the 2’o clock position. The Funky Monkey strategy helps children remember and practice the correct letter formation in a fun, creative, and multi-sensory way.

The "Funky Monkey" program was created by an occupational therapist to help children with the formation of letters that start at the 2 o'clock position (The "Funky Monkey's right ear). Formation of the Funky Monkey letters are supported by the "wave" writing pattern and aims to reduce letter reversals when writing.

The "Funky Monkey" resource includes a classroom posters, playdough mats, animated PowerPoint presentation, a short video explanation, graded worksheets, and activities for use in the classroom, at home, or during therapy. Guidelines for use are included. The program can be downloaded, and worksheets may be copied for use in the classroom.
